HOW TO BUILD A DECADE BIRTHDAY CROWN:

a step-by-step guide

MAKING THE CROWN:

  1. Find someone, anyone, that has a decade birthday coming up. Make a mental note to do something about it. Promptly forget about it because it’s eight months away.

  2. Three months later remember a decade birthday is approaching. Talk with friends and family about making a birthday crown. A helpful step to start with is creating a list of attributes, interests and hobbies of the person. What do they do for work? Do they collect anything? Who are their favorite people? Foods? Movies? Musicians? What makes them laugh? What makes them unique? Is one of these elements strong enough to build a theme around?

  3. One month from the birthday, organize a date for friends and family to build a crown. Encourage everyone to start collecting items (objects, photographs, fabric, incriminating evidence) that can be incorporated into the hat. Decide on the base for the hat. Is it a construction hard hat? A bicycle helmet? A bowler? Will it need a chin strap? The potential weight and size of the finished hat is a big factor in determining what the base should be.

  4. When it’s time for the crown-making, gather participants and materials, wine and munchies, various tools, glues, paints, etc., and BUILD THE THING.

PRESENTATION PARTY:

  1. Gather as many former birthday crown recipients, along with their crowns. Up until the crowning ceremony begins, all of the crowns are discreetly stashed in a back room, out of view.

  2. When it’s time for the coronation to begin, seat the victim/honored guest/crownee in a prominent location. Form a line of the past crownees, now wearing their crowns, and parade around the party until you remember where you seated the honored guest.

  3. The last recipient of a birthday crown performs the coronation and explains everything to disbelieving onlookers. Repeat the parade with the newly crowned recipient at the front of the line, and then go back to enjoying the party!
